The coalfield registered on UNESCO's World Heritage
With large production sites and their head frames, spoil heaps, workers' towns and their facilities...
With large production sites and their head frames, spoil heaps, workers' towns and their facilities (schools, stadiums, training centres, etc), several kilometres of transport network, traditions (Saint Barbara) and hobbies (pigeon fancying, brass bands, etc), the Mining region now presents a huge variety and density of testimonials of this coal industryl history.
No fewer than 353 unique elements are included in the World Heritage area, spreading over 120 kilometers, from east to west, from Fresnes-sur-Escaut to Enquin-les-Mines. Outstanding and universal landscapes and heritage, that have meaning and value.
